Mentorship Programme
Join fellow alumni who have contributed their time to our Education & Career Guidance and Mentorship Programmes and found it truly rewarding!
Victorians are exposed to various ECG programmes during their time in VJC. Your professional journey can make a difference. Your insights and support can help Victorians navigate their paths to success. Share your experience, be a mentor, or offer job shadowing opportunities.
Discover the different ways you can contribute:
EdVantage Fair
The EdVantage Fair is a higher education, careers and scholarships fair held during a Wednesday afternoon in July / August. Students will sign up for 1-2 talks in an area that they are interested in. Alumni have returned as speakers during the EdVantage fair, to share their work experience and answer sector/work-specific questions that Victorians may have.
Learning Journeys
Learning journeys aim to expose students to the job roles available in various industries. It is an opportunity for students to learn what a typical day at work is like. These learning journeys are held in the afternoons, during the school term.
Work Shadowing Programme (WSP)
VJC offers a Work Shadowing Programme (WSP) especially to the JC1 students during the December holidays. Alumni have offered WSP opportunities to students to expose them to the world of work, and to pick up skillsets that would allow them to be more future-ready. Alumni have offered such opportunities to Victorians in areas such as ICT, Game Design, Lab Research, Law, etc.
Internship Opportunities
VJC will publicise internship opportunities especially to graduating/graduated students after their A-level examinations. Students who have some time before commencing on their university studies or NS commitments have expressed that internships are a good way to pick up new skills and gain insights to industry sectors they may be interested in.

Mentorship Programme
In the mentorship programme, the school will pair alumni with students who are interested in their area of work. There will be monthly engagement sessions or conversations where the students will have an opportunity to ask you about your area of work, to find out more about career options and opportunities in your sector. This engagement works both face-to-face and virtually.
HEAR FROM MENTORS/MENTEES
I really appreciated the concept. It's a great initiative to give students a chance to ask any questions and get a sense of the working world. That being said, I think more structure might help because the mentees might not know what to ask or what is good to know. If the mentee doesn't follow up then there isn't much push for the mentor to do so either, even if we're willing to!
Also, what might help is if a mentee could trade mentors; for example, I think I got a sense from Ian that he was more interested in art than history per se, so someone more in the artistic field may have helped (although I did offer contacts in NAC, my area is a lot more history-based). Mentors can also offer multiple facets, from the main job to organisation (eg. public service) to scholarships to uni, so it could be good to understand what each person has to offer as well.
It'd definitely be great for more alumni to come on board, if only to help more students get a sense of various industries - I'm sure the alumni has a lot of varying skills and expertise!

This is a great way for our VJC alumnus to give back to the college and have a direct impact to our juniors. Mentorship is even more important now in this era where there is just too much (mis)information available and challenging for our students to navigate. I would encourage our VJC alumnus, especially those who are already effective mentors in their professions to give back to this program.

It was a good experience for them to speak with someone further down the journey to share perspectives. Yes, I would encourage other alumni to give back and share. What's ordinary to us, would be good learning for them.

Programme was useful in clearing some misconceptions and gaining clarity in terms of what you want to do. Even if I don’t really know exactly what to do, it helped me eliminate what I don’t want to do.

I really appreciated the concept of VJConnects. By connecting students with real-life industry mentors, I felt that it gave us a more in-depth look at sectors that we were interested in and gave us expert advice on what to do if we wanted to succeed in the fields.
